SAY NO TO TESCO CAMPAIGN IN BOSTON SPA

Many of you may have noticed from previous article posts that we are strongly against Tesco opening an Express store here in our beautiful Boston Spa as you can see in the photographs below, taken by Paul Heaton,  http://www.fotocraftimages.co.uk/bspathumbs.htm

Boston Spa is a wonderful and beautifully untouched part of the world and we would pretty much rather keep it that way.  Our community would expect that any changes would be in keeping with the village's unspoilt heritage, and would also be in keeping with the Listed Building Status of many of Boston Spa's buildings, including the proposed Tesco Express site (The Crown Hotel).

The village is so well served with the already well established local traders ie. Costcutter, Londis, Firth's Butchers, Dougie Yeadons, Moo, Broughton's Bakery, Coupland's Bakery, Cohens, the Chemist, The Post Office, Super Shop News, Apres Cafe Bar, Deli Cafe, not to mention the other shops in Clifford and Bramham and of course the small shop which serves around Wickham Avenue.

Having read the Wetherby News on Friday 27th April 2012,  www.wetherbynews.co.uk - it is apparent from the front page that the proposed changes made by many a supermarket for this area, dominated it.

Tesco are to be opening in Collingham not even 2 miles from Boston Spa, Sainsbury's who submitted plans to take over the former Ramada Jarvis Hotel in Wetherby, again approximately 2 miles away from Boston Spa, Asda who want to build a store in the Sandbeck Industrial Estate, also in Wetherby and Morrisons in Wetherby who are extending their store and 'doing away' with already firmly established businesses.  Do we need so many supermarkets, there will be more of them than people?!!  Let's face it, if anyone is really adamant that they want to shop with Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Asda, they can pick up their phone or go online and have it delivered and provided you spend over £50 or so, we understand it is free delivery!

Supermarkets and their babies, such as Expresses, Metros and Extras do NOT have a place in small villages and they definitely DO NOT have a place in Boston Spa.  We do not want them here and we will make our voice heard and also make our objections count.  The first picture below is of The Crown Hotel as it is now, the 4 underneath are just snippets of Boston Spa, I'm sure there are thousands upon thousands of lovely pictures out there showing our wonderful village, in a way we expect it to remain.

Robert and I have found a fantastic site called Tescopoly - it campaigns all over the Country against supermarket chains taking over wherever and whenever they feel like it.  Not caring about the people, environment, job losses, and let's face it these supermarkets aren't even cheaper on price than anything we have now.  We can however say without a shadow of a doubt, they don't have the quality of produce that our local shops have as our shops support our local community, cottage industries, farmers and that list goes on.

Please take a look at Tescopoly - their fantastic slogan is "every little hurts" - how true - and please feel free to email them on our behalf, your support is greatly valued and much appreciated, even if you aren't a resident of Boston Spa or surrounding areas, please empathise as this could happen in your town or village. It's good to see anonymous leave a comment on our blog, perhaps others could follow suit, whether their for or against Tesco being in Boston Spa.

  4. Thank you for your comment Sidley, we welcome all points of view.

I do not think that a Tesco Express will offer better value or indeed any other choice to what the village already supplies. The facts from other villages where a Tesco Express has opened is that in reality the prices in the Tesco Express are higher than those found in a larger Tesco store, and when the local shops close because of the business lost to the new Tesco, then the prices in the Tesco Express rise again.
Costcutter has been in the village for 23 years and has it's own special offers, and also is a vital outlet for many local farmers, cake, sauces, meats and so many other local producers, so I think if Tesco does open then there will be less choice not more, as Tesco did say in their open day meeting they would only be supplying thing such as pre-packed sandwiches etc, they unfortunately do not have a policy of looking after local businesses and are about profit margins and shareholders targets being hit, as with any big corporate faceless companies - a little like the bankers wouldn't you say.

The hard facts are that a Tesco Express will take market share from Costcutter, Londis, the two bakers, Moo, Firth's butchers, Kate Mellor's, the Paper shop, the card shop, the post office and the Deli cafe. Many of them could close, leaving empty shops and no choice whatsoever, and bang there goes your alternative - as once this happens people will find the choice has been taken away from them and they will have no alternative but to shop there or go outside of the village.

However, thank you for making your points known.

  5. Ive kept my eye on all your posts re this tesco thing.

I agree that tesco is not going to bring much to the village, I can get pies and sarnies from cost cutter or the 2 bakers, theres always offers on in both Londis and cost cutters Londis has bread cheaper and good offers on beer my staple diet. Not sure tesco would benefit me.

But what I do know is that I regulalry use church st and the junction with High st is already a dangerous other accident waiting to happen. Most people dont realize is that the crown car park is used by the garage and other business. These vehicles will then have to be parked on High st causing more conjestion. The other week I happened to get there at the same time as the tanker was turning into garage man it was nuts and thats just once every so often. tesco will have daily deliveries and those of you you think its gonna be a little truck are in for a big shock when a massive artic swings around that corner hope Im not there.

Also heard that the church has lost its car park to the new houses and that there will be double yellows along the High St right up to deep dale.

Other day I was having my pasty and took a close look at the junction go have a look and see just how close the wall of the crown is to church st it just nuts man honestly. I feel sorry for the kids and peeps on bikes.
